Day 3. DC

Day 3 DC

The day starts like all of my days in Canby. I got up and fixed a cup of coffee and came back to bed to read the news. Except today I am in my third floor room of my B&B in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Washington DC.

The last two days have been a good opportunity to test out my cold weather wear that I packed for northern Europe. It did pretty well yesterday. Ricky and I went to the mall and attended an outdoor holiday market.   It was adjacent to the national archives. The Marine choir was singing Christmas songs in the rotunda of the building. We noted the irony of America’s best warriors being able to sing like angels. There was a special exhibit on the Vietnam war. I was able to show Ricky The photograph of the young woman leaning over the dead body of her fellow student at Kent State University after being shot by an Ohio national guardsmen. My voice quivered as I explained to him that I was 18 years old when this happened and graduating from high school into a world where not only had 56,000 Americans died in combat but also students who were merely walking from one building to another had been shot and killed. It was into this confusing world that I was entering my adult life.
We found a sports bar and had a drink and were joined by Ricky’s roommate. We tried to go to a high-tech bowling alley but they were having a private bar mitzvah. So we took the metro back to this wonderful neighborhood bar with this high-tech taps and had some more delicious Korean chicken.

Not sure what the plans are today. Tomorrow I will pack up and have lunch with Ricky after visiting him at his office and then head out to Baltimore to catch my 6 PM flight to Barcelona. Where the temperature is in the upper 60s.
